The flow diagram illustrates the sequential steps taken in the recycling of mobile phones.
Overall, it seems to be a complex process, involving many steps. However, at the end, most of the material is utilized in one way or the other, with a minimal wastage.
At first, the mobile phones, after being received from consumers, sent to storage and forwarding facility. From there, it is segregated into three groups, namely resalable components, handset and battery. The former group is directly put into sale, whereas the latter two goes into complex recycling process separately, yet the similar steps are followed for each one of them, including dismantling, mechanical and magnetic separation. After separation, the product obtained from both groups, collectively segregated into three types: metal parts and wiring board, plastics, and other materials.
Furthermore, the first type undergo complex processed of copper smelting and valuable metal refining before being reused, whereas the plastics are either reprocessed in order to make lower grade plastics or incinerated to obtain energy. No further processing is done for other materials.
