Overall, Americans spent a large section of money on food in 1966. By comparison, their majority expending was comprised from cars in 1996.
In 1966, American citizens spent 44% of income on food, which was the largest sector of their expenditure. The second large sector was cars that composed 23% of the total annual spending. By contrast, spending on computer was negligibal, which was merely 1% of the total income. Expenditure on petrol, furniture, restaurants and book were mediorce, which were 6%, 10%, 7% and 6% respectively.
In 1996, the composition of spending altered dramatically compared to that of 1966. Spending on cars constituted the largest section of the annual expenditure, which 45%. By contrast, spending on food regressed to 14%, which ranked the second position. Other expenditures on petrol, restaurant, furniture and computer were 8%, 14%, 8% and 10% respectively. Interestingly, the spending on books declined to 1% of the total expenditure.
