The graph and table below give information about water use
worldwide and water consumption in two different countries
The line graph gives information regarding global water consumption in agriculture, industry, and domestic purposes in the 20th century. The table compares the populations, areas of irrigated land, and water use per capita in Brazil and Congo.
Overall, it is clear that water demand for these three sectors has increased over time and agriculture accounted for the largest proportion of water use. The water consumption in the two countries recorded appeared to reflect the pattern of their irrigated lands.
The agricultural sector seemed to employ the highest amount of water during the last hundred years, with stable rising demand from around 500 km3 in 1900 to almost six times higher in 2000. Industrial ranked second in water consumption, followed by domestic use with only around one-fifth amount of agriculture's need. These sectors also appeared to share a resemblance trend in water use in the early half of the period. However, after the 1950s, there was a marked rise in water demand for the industrial sector, going from just around 200 km3 in 1950 to over 1300 km3 in 2000. Although the water consumption for domestic purposes rose slightly steeply in the last half-century, this sector still needed the least amount of water, with the figure was almost 300km3 at the period end.
With 176 million citizens in 2000, each Brazillian was recorded consuming 359 m3 of water whereas, in Congo, every citizen only used 8 m3 this year. That may be explained by the fact that Brazil had 265 times more irrigated land than Congo.
