The graph below gives information about changes in the birth and death rates in New Zealand between 1901 and 2101.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The presented line graph shows the evolution of the number of births and deaths in New Zealand from 1901 as well as a forecast until 2101.
Overall, it is clearly seen that the birth rate dominated over death rate and will continue to prevail so until 2041. In addition, the number of births peaked in 1961, while deaths will hit the top only at the end of the given period.
The figures for births stood at 20 thousand in 1901. Then, after a slight growth to about 30 thousand before 1940, it skyrocketed to just above 65 thousand in 1971. After that, it sharply declined to 50 thousand in 1981, followed by a recovery to 60 thousand in the 1990s. Based on the prediction, the birth rate will continue to decrease slightly to approximately 43 thousand in 2010.
Similarly, the death rate, being more than twice less than the birth rate in 1901, experienced a notable rise in the first four decades. However, the trend remained the same until the 2010s, where the data was around 30 thousand. According to the forecast, the death rate will increase considerably from 2021 to 2061, overcoming birth rate in 2041 at about 48 thousand. After that, it will level off at almost 60 thousand.
