The line graph illustrates how birth and death rates change in New Zealand in the period of two centuries starting from 1901.
Overall, it can be seen that while the figure for birth rates experienced a fluctuation in some early years, from 1901 to 1991, the opposite was true for death rates. In general, the birth rates were higher than the death rates.
There are two main periods of time: 1901 to 2001 and 2001 to 2101. In the period of a century starting from 1901, while the death rates remained stably, ranged from 10 to 20 thousand, were lower than the birth rates which had the trend to oscillate from 20 thousand and reached a peak at approximately 70 thousand in 1961.
Then, the period of remained years from 2001 to 2101 saw stabilities of both birth and death rates but they had opposite trends. While the death rates had a trend of soaring, the decline in birth rates was clear.
