The line chart illustrates how much carbon dioxide was emitted on average in four European countries from 1967 to 2007 in ten-year intervals, measured in metric tonnes.
Overall, CO2 emissions in the UK and Sweden had a tendency to be downward while their Italy and Portugal counterparts experienced an opposite trend. It is also worth pointing out that British people released more CO2 in comparison with people in the other nations.
A quick glance at the chart reveals that at the beginning of the period, the amount of CO2 emitted by Italians was just above four metric tonnes, follow by the figure for Portuguese with about two metric tonnes lower. At the end, these quantities increased significantly to around 7.5 and 5.5 metric tonnes respectively.
Showing a contradictory pattern, in 1967, it is recorded that nearly 11 metric tonnes of CO2 were discharged by British people whereas that by Swedish residents was approximately nine metric tonnes. While the average CO2 emission in the UK then underwent a gradual drop, reaching below nine metric tonnes in 2007, that in Sweden rose noticeably before falling dramatically to just over five metric tonnes.
