Essay topics:

The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.

The line graph compares the food price index and the average oil price in the years 2000 and 2011.
It is clear that there were significant changes in global food and oil prices shown on the graph. The trends for both food prices and oil prices were relatively similar, so a correlation of 93.6% was suggested.
In 2000, the food price index stood at around 90 points and the average oil price was at about $30 per barrel. Over the following four years, these prices remained relatively stable, before rising steadily between 2004 and 2007. By 2007, the food price had reached over 130 points and the figure for the average oil price had been at about $50 per barrel.
In the year 2008, the oil price increased considerably and reached its peak at over $130 per barrel, while the food price index also rose to above 220 points in the same year. At the beginning of 2009, the figures saw significant falls, the oil price stood at nearly $40 per barrel and the food price dropped to approximately 140 points. In 2011, both commodities increased once again, the average oil price rose to roughly $100 and the food price index reached a peak of just under 240 points.
