Overall, there was a decrease in the number of elephants in most countries such as Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China, with the highest number in India and the smallest in China.
In 1997, the number of elephants stood at near 10000 in India, which was significantly higher than the second highest - Myanmar, at around 5000. Meanwhile, Thailand had near 4000 elephants, Malaysia and Sri Lanka were similar in the figure, at about 3000. The remaining countries had a smaller number, at roughly 1000 for each.
The next 7 years saw the number of elephants in India, Malaysia and Thailand decreased considerably in around 8000, 1000 and 1000 respectively. The number of elephants also declined slowly in the others, except for Cambodia when there was a rise in this country's figure. China continued to be the country which had the smallest number of elephants.
