Overall, as can be seen from the chart, the total amount of air pollutant experienced a significant decline and industry was the sector that saw a sharp fall among the three surveyed. Units are measured in million tonnes.
In 1990, the total amount of air pollutants in the UK was 7 billion tonnes, then it decreased considerately to 4 billion tonnes in 1999. The figure continued to experience a slight fell of merely 2 million tonnes in the next 3 years before reaching its lowest point at just above 3 billion tonnes in the end.
Industry accounted for the highest amount of air pollutants, at around 5 billion tonnes in 1990. There was then a downward trend throughout the period surveyed to 2 billion tonnes in 2005, with a particularly sharp fall in the middle years, from 1993 to 1999. On the contrary, transport and households generally produced fewer air pollutants than the former. Air pollutants from transport remained so throughout the period at about 1 billion tonnes, whereas the figure for households witnessed a slight decrease from around 1 billion tonnes in 1990 to just above 0.1 billion tonnes by 2005.
