The graph below shows electricity production (in terawatt hours) in France between 1980 and 2012.
The line graph illustrates electricity production from four different sources in France from 1980 to 2012.
Over this 32-year period, nuclear power were a largely the most important source of electricity in France while renewable energy always provided the lowest volume of electricity.
In 1980, thermal power plants were the largest source of electricity in France, generating approximately 120 terawatt hours. Meanwhile, power generation from nuclear and hydroelectric sources stood at moderate levels, around 75 terawatt hours. Just one year later, nuclear power overtook thermal power to become France's primary electricity source. From then on, power production from nuclear sources soared dramatically, peaking at 430 terawatt hours in 2005. By contrast, the figure for thermal power declined to its lowest level of 30 terawatt hours in 1988 and kept hovering at this point for the rest of the shown period. Hydroelectric plants provided quite stable amounts of electricity throughout these years, around 75 terawatt hours. From 1980 to 1996, power generation by renewables were negligible and the figure only saw a moderate rise from 2006 before reaching its highest of 25 terawatt hours in 2012.
