Both immigration and emigration witnessed a steady rise over the period shown, but emigration are significantly higher. As a result, the net number are positive all the time and peaked in 2004 and 2007.
In 1999, nearly 300 thousand individuals decided to leave for another country while approximately 450 thousand ones became British residents. The net immigration was under 200 thousand in 1999 and remained at a similar level until 2003. From 1999 to 2004, the figure for immigration rose by 150 thousand while emigration witness a much small rise, resulting in that net number peaked at 250000 people in 2004.
After 2004, the rate of immigration remained a high level while the number of people emigrating fluctuated. Emigration dropped suddenly in 2007, before peaking at 420000 in 2018. As a result, the net migration figure rose to around 240000 in 2017 and fell back to 180 in 2018.
