The line graph illustrates how many foreign tourists came to the UK for three specific reasons from 1989 to 2009.
Overall, it is clear that there was an increase in the total number of overseas tourists visiting the UK. While tourists who came for holidays was the most common throughout the period, the opposite was true for meeting friends and relatives.
In 1989, about 6.5 million visitors travelled to the UK for holidays. This number rose rapidly and reached a peak of 9 million in 1997 before falling dramatically to 6.5 million in 2004. After that the number of people coming for holidays saw a recovery to approximately 9 million at the end of the period
Meanwhile, business and socializing trips to the UK showed almost similar trends, starting from 3.5 million and 5 million respectively in 1989, which was followed by an gradual increase to 6 and 7 million in 2009. But a slight fall of roughly 1 million can be witnessed in the number of foreign tourists travelling to the UK in the final year.
