The given line graph illustrates the trend for recycling of four different packaging material over a 28 year period between 1982 and 2010.
In general, the activity of making waste reusable, regardless of the material, is seen to become more popular during the period of the study. Paper and cardboard were the most recycled in 1982 and still remain so 3 decades later, whereas plastic remains the least to be reprocessed.
Looking at paper & cardboard and glass containers, it can be seen that both saw some fluctuations over the years, settling at a rate slightly higher than what they started with, 65% and 50% respectively. The former, after a minor drop, reached its peak at 80% (1994). After which, it steadily dropped to 70%. Meanwhile, the latter underwent a 10% drop by 1990 before recovering in 1994 and gradually growing thereafter.
Aluminum and Plastics, did not observe a single drop over the course of the study, once introduced in 1986 and 1980, respectively. Metal recycling saw a significant expansion of about 40% in total from 3%, a starting figure that matches plastics’ which was unable to gain even 10% in favour.
