The line graph compares three countries the USA, Sweden and Japan in terms of the percentage of elderly people over a period of 100 years from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, it can be seen that during the period the proportion of elderly people in all the three countries increased. However, Japan shows a dramatic increase when compared to other two countries.
When looking at details, the USA and Sweden show almost similar trend. In the beginning of the period in 1940, the percentage of elderly people in USA and Sweden were almost 9% and 7% respectively. After more than five decades in the late 90s Sweden overcame USA and expected to reach its peak at 25% by the year of 2040. However, in 1980 USA figure touched 15% and it is forecasted that it will remain stable in 15% till 2020. Following this, a sudden increase expecting in USA aged people proportion between 2020 and 2040 and the figure will reach a peak at 23%, by the last year of the period just below to the Sweden.
Although Japans proportion of aged people increased during the period, it shows a different trend. In the initial year of the period, Japans figure for elderly people was only 5%, which is less than the other two countries. Between 1940 and 2000 it dropped to below 5%. But, after the Millenium the aged people percentage in Japan rose dramatically and the projected figure in 2040 will be almost 27%, which is higher than the other two countries.
