The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph compares the percentage of the population who is 65 years old and over from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden, and USA. Overall, it is clear that the percentage of the old generation in the three countries is expected to present an essential increase in the future as a whole and Japan is estimated to be the biggest aging society.
In 1940, USA, with almost 10% old people, had the largest old population, followed by Sweden at about 7%. Japan owned the smallest percentage of senior, at 5%.
Over the period of a century(from 1940 to 2040), the percentage of old American population is predicted to increase, with rising to 15% in 1980, then remaining stable until 2017, and finally jumping to about 23% in 2040. The similar trend could also be seen in proportion in Sweden, but it is expected to increase more obviously, overtaking that in America in 1995, finally reaching 25% in 2040. The ten decades will witness a sharp increase in old Japanese population, with first leveling off at 5% until 2005, and then ballooning to the highest point at almost 27% in 2040 after overtaking the figures for American and Swedish seniors in the same year (2030).
