The chart compares the carriage of goods by four different modes of transport in the UK between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, the number of goods transported by road, water and pipeline increased over the period shown, while that carried by rail tended to decrease.
Of 4 modes, road was the most popular. Despite a slight fluctuation, its volume of goods increased significantly, from 70bn tonnes in 1974 to roughly 100bn tonnes in 2002.
Having a relatively similar level which remained stable at around 40 tonnes during the first 4 years, water and rail followed different patterns in the rest of the period. Except a moderate decline from 1992 to 1998, the transport of goods by water almost expanded to just under 65bn tonnes. Conversely, rail experienced a dramatic decrease, hitting the bottom at approximately 25bn tonnes in 1994, before recovering to slightly over its starting point in 2002.
Seeing the third largest increase in the amount of goods carried, pipeline was still the least common. It carried only 5bn tonnes in 1974, which, then, rose gradually by 1995, prior to leveling off at 20bn tonnes afterward.
