The given line graph illustrates the number of commodities transported by four kinds of transportation in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
By and large, exclusive of the transport of rail, the remained three kinds of transport saw upward trend in terms of the amount of items between the given years.
Turning to the detail, nearly 70 million tonnes of goods were transported by the road in 1974, as opposed to the pipeline, which merely accounted for under 10 million tonnes. The quantity of commodity transported by the road reached a pinnacle of just below 100 million tonnes in 2002, although it fluctuated throughout the given period. By the same token, with regard to the transportation of pipeline, after increasing gradually over 10 million tonnes between 1978 and 1982, the number then continued to grow progressively until 1995, when it reached a plateau of slightly over 20 million tonnes. Since then, this figure remained unchanged until the rest of the given period.
The most striking point is that the number of the goods transported by the water intersected with that of the rail, standing at 40 million tonnes in 1978. The amount of goods transported by the water outstripped that of the rail and culminated at around 65 million tonnes in 2002, although it was the penultimate number among the four types of transportation in 1974.
