The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four modes of transport.
The line graph compares the amount of goods transported in the United Kingdom from 1974 to 2002 using different means of transportation. Units are measured in millions of tonnes.
Overall, the quantity of products transported in the UK over the period by all means of transport increased except for rail. It is also noticeable that road was the primary means of transporting goods while the least used was through a pipe.
In 1974, the amount of goods transported on road was at around 70 million tonnes and this figure slightly fluctuated before climbing up to nearly 100 million tonnes in 2002. Goods shipped through pipeline began at approximately 5 million tonnes then rose gradually for the next years to peak at just over 20 million tonnes in 1995, after which it levels off until the final year.
With regard to the figure of goods hauled in water, it started at just under 40 million tonnes but rose by nearly 50% between 1978 and 1982. The number remained relatively constant until it dropped to almost 50 million tonnes in 1998, then subsequently went up to just over 60 million tonnes in 2002. Rails' figure fell from 40 million tonnes in 1974 to roughly 30 million tonnes in 1994, before increasing to its original number in the last year.
