The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph compares the million tonnes of good quantities hauled from 1974 to 2002 in the UK by four types of transport namely road, water, rail, and pipeline.

It is clear that there was an overall increase in goods transportation over the period shown. Goods transported by road experienced the most quantity of goods compared with other modes, while the figures for goods transported using pipeline was the lowest in total.

In 1974, just only about five million tonnes of goods were transported by pipeline, while the figure for goods hauling by road was significantly higher, at about 70 million tonnes. From 1974 to 1978, the quantities of transported goods by boats and railway remained stable, but there was a considerable growth of waterway using in 1982, at nearly 50 million tonnes, whilst railway using fell slightly in the same year.

From 1974 to 2002, the goods hauled by pipeline and by road saw stable increases and peaked at about 22 million tonnes and 90 million tonnes in 2002, respectively. In contrast, there were fluctuations in the application of two remaining modes.
