The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
As seen from the graph, road has always been the most popular mode of transportation of goods since 1974 to 2002. Use of road has decreased at two points over the years, but nevertheless maintained its upward nature. In 2002 the goods transported by road is still the highest, about a 100 Million tonnes.
Goods transported by water was somewhat steady from 1974 to 1978, after which there was a substantial increase over the time of 1978 to 1982. After that the amount of goods transported was steady for about 10-12 years. It decreased slowly from 1994 but had a steep growth after that till 2002.
Goods transported by rail was similar to water till 1978, followed by a frequent fall and rise over the years. In 2002, the amount of goods transported by rail became almost the same as it was in 1974, around 40 Million tonnes. The curve for rail is a little irregular.
Use of pipeline is the least among the four modes of transportation. In 1974 about 5 Million tonnes of goods were transported using pipelines. It was almost steady until 1978, after which it increased. Then a little before 1982 the increases stopped and again the amount of goods increased in a very slow rate. There was an increase in it for about 4 years. Then the amount was the same till 2002.
