The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport
The line graph illustrate the amount of goods ferried by four modes of transport in UK from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, there was a general increase in transportion of various items by road, water and pipeline except for rail which decreased in 1974. Road remained the major transporter of different types of goods, whilst pipeline was marginally used. It is noticeable clearly seen that, there was an instability on all modes of transport systems as shown by highs and lows.
There was a sharp increase on all modes of transport apart from rail throughout the given period. Road was the popular mode of transportation of goods from 1974 at about 70 million tonnes. It rose gradually to around 81 million tonnes in the early 1990s and declined steadily to approximately 78 million tonnes in the late 1990s, then fluctuated rapidly to almost 89 million tonnes in 2002. In terms of pipeline, it contributed insignificantly to movement of goods below other modes of transport. Highlighted on the graph, goods ferried by pipeline were around 4 million tonnes in 1974 and began to rise moderately to late 1990s, as it remained constant in 2002, at almost 62 million tonnes.
Furthermore, in 1974 rail was commonly used than water to ferry goods. From 1978, water became popular and it increased sharply from 40 million tonnes in 1978 to early 1980s, when it was steady. In early 1990s it carried approximately 58 million tonnes and it decreased significantly to about 47 million tonnes in 1998, thereby increasing dramatically to almost 62 million tonnes in 2002. Goods ferried by rail was at 40 million tonnes in 1974 and began to decrease, a dip was din 1984, at around 30 million tonnes. It rose gradually from 1986 and decrease again in 1994 and fluctuated rapidly to almost 41 million tonnes in 2002.
