The graph illustrates the global prices of food and oil during the period of 2000 – 2011.
It is noticeable that the food and oil had a parallel trend in the 11-year period with the correlation of 93.6% between two items. Furthermore, food and oil experienced a considerable rise although many price fluctuations can be seen during those 11 years.
To begin with, food price index gradually rose from the beginning of the year 2000 to the year of 2007, from 90 points to nearly 140 points. The followed years showed a sharp climb of food price index which rocketed from 140 points and reached 220 points in the middle of 2008. Surprisingly, the index plunged to the same point of 2007, which was 140 then increasingly fluctuated until the middle of 2010. Eventually, the index of food price soared to the highest point of almost 240 scores at the end of the period.
The similar trend can be seen in the change of oil prices during the years. A steady increase trend was shown from 2000 to 2007. After that, the oil price reached a peak in the middle of 2008 with approximately $130 per barrel. The later trend indicated a dramatic fall of oil price, which was from $130 down to around $50 in 2009 before it recovered to nearly $100 per barrel in 2011.
