In general, there was a moderate fluctuation in marriages and divorces from 1975 to 2000. The number of divorces had been always lower than second marriages before went up and higher than the number of remarriages in 1990. In 2000, both remarriages and broken marriages reached a peak of about 255 thousand and 250 thousand people respectively. The first marriages witness a slight decrease from 1985 and a dramatic decline in a course of ten years from 1990 after a leap from approximately 320 thousand to more than 400 thousand people between 1975 and 1985.
As a result, total marriages in England underwent a sharp growth by over 150 thousand people from 1975 to 1985 followed by a noticeable decrease in the next ten years and rise slightly to about 580 thousand people in a course of 5 since 1995.
