Long-term international migration, emigration, and net migration from 1999 to 2008.
The given chart details the number of people(in thousands) who moved in and out of the UK along with the net migration numbers over a period of 9 years from 1999 to 2008.
Looking from the overall perspective, it is readily apparent that over the period as a whole, the net survey has witnessed an erratic pattern. Also, more immigrants compared to emigrants were reported throughout the year.
According to the given illustration, to begin with, just below 500,000 people moved in the UK as against 200,000 fewer emigrants. Further, followed by a similar pattern, both the numbers rose up significantly by nearly 10,000 and 180,000 respectively in 2002 before leveling off until the next year. After that, despite a few fluctuations, immigrants jumped to a peak of approximately 580,000, while the emigrants remained lower by 200,000.
Turning to the net statistics, the number of immigrants continued to be the same at 190,000 for the consecutive two years in a row. Although the same went up marginally in 2001, the pattern observed a drop-down prior to stabilizing at 170,000 in the following two years. Further, 2004 marked the year of maximum immigrations( above 200,000). However, after reaching on par with the number in 2006, it soars up slightly before slipping down to the initial value.
