Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar which causes many health problems Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar Do you agree or disagree
Increasing sugar levels among people is a global issue nowadays and in order to make people eat less sugar, cost of foods and drinks that includes sugar should be increased. However, I disagree with this opinion as there are other better ways to deal with this problem.
It is true that certain chemicals used in manufacturing edible products contain very high levels of glucose. It can lead to serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, breathing problems like asthma and so on. But making them expensive is not going to help the situation. This has been proven by a study conducted in the US, where the prices of famous cold drinks, with high sugar levels, increased significantly on purpose to check the influence on its sales. The results suggested that the sales did not have any noticeable effect. This leads to the assertion that increasing the costs is not a solution.
But there are other more effective ways to deal with this issue. First of them is to test the products and analyse the amount of sugar present in them. Then, one can find other alternative ways to replace the health- depleting sugar with a harmless one. For instance, there are products launched for this purpose, which claims that they includes sugarless sugar, in other words, the type of sugar which tastes the same as usual but with less harmful effects.
Also, media and influencers can help to make people aware of the consequences of eating and drinking certain products with high sugar level rating. This was done in China in 2017, when a news channel displayed the effects of sugar on body organs in 3d animation. The majority of the people were disgusted and they immediately made a decision not to consume such products or to consume in less quantities.
To conclude, making the products with high sugar levels expensive will not be helpful in dealing with this health issue, other ways which are discussed in the essay can be much more influential.
