The graph shows the information about the number of marriages in the UK between 1951 and 2009 through 3 clear parameters.
It is clear from the graph that the first marriages occupies the majority of all marriages over the time of this survey whereas people who remarry are less so far. There is a downward trend in the total of marriages and the number of the first marriages, the reverse is true with the tendency of the remarriages.
Between 1951 and 1971, the number of all marriages increased significantly from nearly 400 thousand to approximately 500 thousand in 1971, the line of first marriages was parallel to total line and got the highest point at about 400 thousand. In the same period, the statistic of remarriages decreased slightly at the start before rising gradually afterwards.
Over a period of 39 years, there were the falls in the number of people marrying in total, about just under 300 thousand in 2001 and reaching the bottom at 270 thousand in 2009. The people married for the first time decreased dramatically to 260 thousand in 2001, increasing modestly a year after and finally fell to the same level onward. Even though have some fluctuation but the figure for remarriages did not present a significant change and it stables around 120 thousand.
