The pie charts illustrate four kinds of transport crossing the bridge in the UK in three years, namely 1965, 1985 and 2005.
In general, there was a noticeable increase in the percentages of private cars and recreational vehicles which crossed the bridge, while a constant trend can be seen if we look at the figures for public transport, lorries, and other commercial vehicles. It is also clear that the figure for private cars crossing the bridge was higher than for any other type of transport over the period shown.
At the beginning of the period, 47% of vehicles crossing this bridge were private cars, compared to only 29% of public transport. Over the following 20 years, the proportion of private cars which crossed the bridge rose slightly, before climbing to a peak of 74% in 2005. In contrast, public transport followed the opposite trend to that of private cars, with figures decreasing to 5% in 2005.
In 1965, the percentage of larries and other commercial vehicles crossing the bridge stood at 20%, while the figure for recreational vehicles was lower, at 4%. After 20 years, the proportion of larries and other commercial vehicles increased to 26% but decreased to 12% in 2005.
