The pie charts compare the number of housing ownership and renting in the UK for 1991 and 2007 in percentage terms.
In 1991, home owner took the main proportion, which was approximately 60% or over half of all homes. Socially rented homes accounted for 22% or a quarter of all homes. The remaining homes were mostly private renting (10%) with a tiny fraction of social housing, which only took 6%.
Sixteen years later, in 2007, there was an increase in the percentage of home owner, which has reached 70% or thee quarters of all. This was a rise of 10% compared with 1991. The increase of home ownership could be explained by the the decrease of social renting from 22% in 1991 to 18% in 2007. Privately rented homes remained unchanged. However, there were 5 more millions homes so the number of private renting must have risen despite of being unchanged in percentage. Social housing decreased three-fold compared with 1991, which had dropped from 6% to nearly 2%.
To summarize, home owner is the largest sector while social housing is the least popular type of housing.
