The pattern of working and other life activities has gone through transformations during the last 5 decades. As indicated in the pie chart, working occupied 33% of an working adult's life and time spent on travelling to work was only 2% whereas in 2008, the time of spending in both working and commuting has increased to 42% and 8% respectively.
Except working and working-related activities, proportion of other activities have also shifted. Back in 1958, hanging out with friends and families took 19% and it dropped to only 6% in 2008. People rather spend their time alone than staying with others. In addition, instead of going out, people may find relaxing at home is a better way to spend their leisure time. The percentage of this activity has uplifted from 8% to 13%.
Moving on the sleeping time, since the working hours are longer than before. The sleeping time is shortened by 7% in 2008 comparing to 1958. The pressure brought by working result in less relaxing and sleeping time. As for other interest or sports, slight increase from 6% to 8% occurred in this category. Sports is another way to relaser pressure and also benefits the mental and physical health.
In general, the overall trend of the working and leisuring time has shifted towards longer working hours. In addition, people are prefer staying at home and realx rather than going outside.
