Fast food has been blamed as one of the top reasons that caused problems to human health. Fowever i do not agree with the idea to levy high tax on it to solve the problem.
First and foremost, there are still a big number of people living in poverty, who could now live on fast food which is comparatively cheaper than so-called healthy food. That is to say, while some people are pursuing a decent diet, others are struggling to survive. For example, there is about 10 percent of dwellers in big cities who do not get employed or are unable to work, and this type of people will need fast food to support their lives. In case a higher tax were put on these food, it would impose higher pressure on them.
Secondly, apart from fast food, there are many other elements leading to disease, such as genetic issues, insufficient sleep, lack of exercise, degrading environment, as well as government guidance and policies. A good example is a comparison between two countries. Vending machines with high calories drink like coca are available everywhere in USA, while more healthy drinks like green tea are easier to buy in Japan. as a result, the rate of obesity in the United States is about 10 times more than that in Japan.
In addition, high tax is never an effective solution. this can be illustrated by cigarrettes, which has been added with super high tax for decades but smoking is still showing an upward trend.
In conclusion, imposing high tax on fast food is not one of the good measures in terms of preventing health problems.
