The given table illustrates the number of native speakers of six languages and the number of speakers of these languages as an additional language.
Overall, as can be seen, it is noticeable that Mandarin Chinese has the highest citizens who speak Mandarin Chinese language. In addition, it can divide into three groups which are similar in number including Mandarin Chinese and English, Hindi and Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese.
The figures for people speaking Mandarin Chinese and English are higher than other languages, at 1090 million and 942 million respectively. It is remarkable that 900 million of Mandarin Chinese use it as a first language, compared to 190 million of people speak this language as a second language. By contrast, the number of native people of English is only 339 million, while the figure for native speakers of English as an additional language is 603 million.
Likewise, the total number of speakers of Hindi and Spanish are 490 million and 420 million respectively, when it comes to using these languages as a second language the number for Hindi (120 million) is under 2 times higher than that for Spanish. Also, native speakers of Arabic and Portuguese account for lower proportions, at only 206 million and 203 million respectively. However, the number of Arabic speakers as an additional language is nearly 2.5 times higher than those of Portuguese as a second language (10 million).
