The table displays the percentage of national consumer expenditure on different categories in five countries in 2002.
Overall, it is clear that spending on food and beverage along with tobacco took the first place in all studied nations with big figure. In contrast, investment on entertainment and education was extremely low compared to these mentioned items. Meanwhile, clothing and footwear’s budget was average.
Looking at details, Turkey had the highest expenditure on both necessities and leisure and education with 32.14% and 4.35% respectively while demand for outfit was 6.63%, which is the second high number just after Italy. Ireland’s consumption of necessities was 28.91% whilst proportion of two remaining categories recorded as 6.43% for outfit and 2.21% for leisure and education.
Consumer spending of Italy, Spain and Sweden were almost similar on food, drinks and tobacco. However, clothing and footwear as well as leisure and education saw relatively big difference in figure when Italy dominated in both items with 9% for the former and 3.2 % for the latter. Despite consuming less than Sweden in entertainment and education sector, Spain defeated the Scandinavian country in expenditure of food and clothing.
