The table below gives information on households with a regular use of car in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.
The line graph compared the changes in the numbers of cars being used by British households in a 36-year-period between 1971 and 2007.
Overall, as can be seen from the graph that car ownership in the UK increased over the period surveyed. Particularly, households with two cars rose gradually; while households without a car fell significantly. Units are measured in percentages.
In 1971, the number of households with two cars was at approximately 8%; whereas the figure for families with no car stood at the highest peak, at nearly 50%. Over 36 years, both two figures fluctuated sharply. The proportion of households with two cars witnessed an upward trend of 20% and reached its highest point at 28% in the end; however, the that for no car families dropped dramatically to just around 25%.
Meanwhile, only about 44% of families having one car, compared to merely 1% of households with three or more cars. The figure for the former then remained so throughout the period, while that of the latter experienced a slight increase of only 7%.
