However, some places lost their popularity over the given four years, namely Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and Macquarie Island.
In 1996, Great Barrier Reef welcomed 1,670,000 tourists. This number then increased dramatically and hit the highest number of 3,200,000 in 2000. While the second attractive site was Central Eastern Rainforest Reverse which underwent a consistently decline every year, falling from 810,000 in 1996 to 770,000 in 2000.
By the contrast, more people were keen on Blue Mountains, with the figure rising from 526,000 to 581,000 over the period. Similarly, Tasmania also presented a growth in the number of visitors to 483,000. There was a great rise in the number of tourists in Shark Bay to 102,000 in 1998, followed by a plummeting to 89,000 in the last year which higher than the initial year. While the least attraction was presented at Macquarie Island, decreasing only 20 over the year.
