The table below shows the amount of waste production (in millions of tonnes) in six different countries over a twenty-year period.
The table compares six different nations in terms of their waste output between 1980 and 2000.
It is clear that waste production increased in all countries but in Korea. The US produced the largest amount of waste each year.
In 1980, the US released 131 million tonnes of waste, which is the highest amount among the six countries. The figure rose to 151 million tonnes a decade later and to 192 in 2000. Japan, which is the second biggest polluter, was responsible for 28 million tonnes of waste in the year 1980, and its output almost doubled to 53 million tonnes at the end of the period.
Ireland, Poland, and Portugal released far less waste output compared to the two nations above, with the figures being below 7 million tonnes in all three years. There was no data for Korea in 1980. However, it is the only country to manage to reduce its carbon footprint, falling from 31 million tonnes of waste in 1990 to 19 tonnes in 2000
