In contrast, Australia and New Zealand's imprisonment numbers took a dive from 1930 to 1940 and remained fairly stable in 1950 before increasing gradually in 1970. In 1980, Australia and New Zealand stood at 50 thousand and 90 thousand, respectively. Turning to the United States, the number of prisoners stayed fairly constant for 40 years before rocketing to nearly 140 thousand, the highest among the 5 countries. For Canada, the figures fluctuated slightly before decreasing to 100 thousand.
