Overall, there were general upward trends in the proportions of men and women who were at normal weight, whereas the figure for overweight people experienced a reverse pattern. It is also clear that there was no change in underweight women compared to a slight decrease in men.
In 1999, 43% of Vietnamese females had normal body weight, followed by that of males, at 48%. In the following ten years, the percentages of these two groups increased gradually to 56% for the former and 54% for the latter.
Overweight women accounted for 28% in the first period before decreasing about twofold to 15% in the next decade. In comparison, there was also a steady drop of 3% in both overweight and underweight men, from 26% to 23%. Over the given period, the rate of Vietnamese females who were underweight remained stable at 29%.
