The visuals give information about the number of spacecraft launched by various national governments between 1957 and 2007 and the purpose of each mission.
The given charts indicate the amount of spacecraft which were launched by national authorities and their reasons for launching spacecraft during a 50-year period between 1957 and 2007. Overall, the Soviet Union or later became Russia launched the most space vehicles among all over the countries surveyed. Also, spacecraft launched the most commonly for communicating.
It is apparent that from 1957 to 2007, there were 3484 satellites launched by the Soviet Union/Russia, accounting for more than half of the total and approximately doubling the USA data. The number for USA’s launched spacecraft, at 1760, also reached the second-highest data. Moreover, it was higher than the sum of the rest at about 1300, except for Russia. It is clear that, with 28 space vehicles launched, Canada accounted for the lowest number, which was one in ten that of the European Union. The commercial launched 539 spacecraft, more than two times as high as the figure for Japan.
It is noteworthy that about a quarter of space vehicles were launched for communications purposes, five times higher than the lowest data going for planetary exploration. Also, nearly 20% of the launched satellites were for surveilling, which doubled the number of researching satellites. The number of spacecraft working for the manned space programs and observing weather was nearly the same at merely under 10 per cent.
