Essay topics:

The flow chart below illustrates the typical stages of a traditionally published novel. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the process.

The flowchart describes the process of publishing a novel, consisting of 15 possible steps. Those steps involve such participants as an author of the book, an agent and a publishing house.

First of all, the author should have an idea for his or her novel. After preparing a draft version and polishing it, the author is expected to submit his or her writing piece to agents.

Then, an interested agent contacts the author to sign a contract. With the agent's remarks and advice applied to the novel, the work is submitted to publishing houses.

Finally, as an offer from an interested editor is made, the agency and the publisher negotiate the contract terms. However, prior to contract negotiation, there might be an auction to select an editor in case of multiple offers. Aftewards, the author's changes to contract are discussed. When the final version of the novel is ready, publishers start marketing procedures and contact booksellers. As a result, the book gets published.
