You are working for a company. You need to take some time off work and want to ask your manager about this.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:

explain why you want to take time off work
give details of the amount of time you need
suggest how your work could be covered while you are away

Dear Mr. Watson,

My name is Jocelyn Mascarenhas and the purpose of writing this letter is to ask for permission for a few days of holiday.

First of all, as you already know, I am preparing for English Proficiency test (IELTS), which has been made mandatory if i want a hike in salary. I have been practicing it for a couple of days now but it is very difficult to concentrate in this hustle and bustle and whenever I try to practice, most during break times, my colleague try to chat up and I end up socializing with them out of courtesy. This exam is really important for me, not only for a brighter future. But also to broaden my horizons.

If a leave can be granted for a couple of days, it would be really appreciated. To be precise, my exam is on 13th September. So, a leave from Monday (25th August) till the exam would be sufficient enough.

If you permit me this study leave from Monday, I would have 3 days to explain my work and duties to any of the employees. I would personally like to suggest one name, Mr. Jack Bethoz. He is a close friend of mine and he already knows half of my work. So it will be a smooth transition and my absence would not be missed. He is also known as 'Jack of all trades'. I am sure he will quickly grasp and learn the traits. If needed, I will be a phone call away in case of any trouble or emergency.

Thanking you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,
Jocelyn Mascarenhas.
