The emergence of the digital era has revolutionized the way we acquire information, leading to the widespread belief that printed books and newspapers will soon become obsolete. Some argue that with the increasing accessibility to free online content, there will be no need to pay for physical copies of newspapers and books. However, I strongly disagree with this viewpoint.
First and foremost, while it is undeniable that digital material has significantly impacted the publishing industry, it has not completely replaced the traditional print format. Many readers still prefer the tangible experience of reading a physical book or newspaper, which cannot be replicated by digital media. For many, the act of holding a physical book, flipping through its pages, and smelling the ink and paper is an integral part of the reading experience. Printed books are often collected, well-preserved, and passed down through generations, becoming cherished family heirlooms.
Secondly, the core value of printed materials extends beyond the content. Books, in particular, have an emotional and sentimental value that cannot be substituted by digital media. To many people, not only does reading books help them entertain and feel at ease, but it is also a chance for them to live another life, to truly feel the innermost emotions of the characters, the contentment, the sorrow, the pain, and to understand the messages that writers want to convey.
Lastly, thanks to reading printed books, one can absorb more information, with better efficiency when compared to digital materials. One study conducted in Italy in 2014 indicated that readers of print books absorb and remember more of the plot than readers of e-books do. In addition, while reading online, people can be easily distracted from the content by numerous uncontrolled advertisements, which would never be the case in physical books.
In conclusion, while it is true that technology has made it easier and more convenient to get access to information online, the demise of printed newspapers and books is not imminent. Physical books and newspapers will keep on holding a special place in readers’ hearts.
