Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation
Why might this be the case?
What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?
Recently, a lot of individuals prefer to run their own businesses to being employed by an establishment. In this essay, I will be elucidating the reasons for this attitude and also comment on the drawbacks of such preference.
To proceed, many will rather be their own bosses because they feel it promotes their versatility and productivity. It allows them chart their own paths and not achieve the vision of another. To illustrate this, the story of the founder of Microsoft comes to mind, he decided to begin writing computer codes even at a time when computing giants such as IBM were still grappling in the dark about the future of their organizations, and his intervention became the salvation the world needed to make computing and computers readily accessible and available. Research has shown that 80% of self-employed individuals report better job satisfaction when compared to employees of corporations.
As rosy as the idea seems, however, it is also bedevilled with a number of demerits. These include the encumbrances that litter the path to establishing the venture such as regulations and taxes. These usually involve a huge capital outlay which may definitely deal a great blow to the operating capital of the business, from which the individual may not recover. In Nigeria, more than 80% of start-ups fail due to these reasons. Another disadvantage is the lack of diversity in the business model, the individual being the sole authority will tend to make bad business decisions and without any group of advisers to point out the folly of such. On the long haul, they may not be able to make the desired impact as they would have wanted. An example of such was a young man who introduced a product to rival an already established brand, got overwhelmed by his perceived success that he went bankrupt within 2 years
In conclusion, being independent is gradually becoming the fad, due to the freedom to express it gives, however, there exists various drawbacks that may undermine such decisions. So, setting out properly and learning from others will go a long way in ensuring success.
