The best investment one can make is in their own knowledge and thus, many people might feel that having in depth knowledge of a particular subject is better, but is that always true? According to me, I feel that it is a better to have broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize. I feel this way due to three reasons that I will explore in my essay.
Preeminently, if you have broad knowledge on many academic subjects you have a wide variety of job description that would fit you. This will help you explore and dive deep into what fascinates you the most. For me personally after finishing my undergrad from Electronics when I started to search for job, I could see myself fitting into variety of hardware and software roles such as chip designer, software developer, data analyst and many more. This helped me boost my confidence and also provided me with a sense of security.
In conjunction with that, it is always easier to shift between roles when you start to feel saturated with your existing role and want new opportunities for yourself. For instance, I have been working as a software engineer for three years in a company and I started to feel there was no more intellectual growth for me in that field. In addition, to that I wanted to shift to data scientist job as I wanted to have some new experience and challenges for me. It was easy for me to do because I had taken up a course on data science during my undergrad and it helped me to a great extend.
Congruously, when you have understanding on wide variety of subjects this enhances your ability to learn new things easily and you find connections between various fields. This would help with any new skill you want to learn. Specializing would make your career rigid in a specific subject. This might result in limited opportunity and after working for few years there might not be any learning curve or challenges that would excite.
In a nutshell, I feel having knowledge on various fields is better than specializing in a specific subject. This way you always have the opportunity to learn new things, find new and exciting challenges for yourself and it would not mentally saturate and drain you easily.
