The article introduces the topic of reducing office hours. More specifically, the writer discusses that laborers should spend only four days working. The lecturer in the listening passage disagree. He believes that reducing the workday brings more harm than benefit, and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that both companies and their workers will benefit from the shortened workweek. Companies can gain more profits due to the fact that they still pay the same amount of money for more workers, which helps laborers to feel more comfortable at work and make fewer mistakes. The lecturer, however, disagrees with this viewpoint. He states that more workers require more space, health care, vice versa, which makes things worse for the labor user.
Secondly, the author also claims that the number of unemployment would also decrease. If the same number of people spend less time on the same workload, that is when companies need to hire more laborers. The speaker is doubtful that this is accurate. He suggests that some companies will require their laborers to work overtime and those who can not reach the bar will be fired. It also puts more stress on workers because they have to complete the same amount of work in a shorter time.
Another reason why the author feels that employees are beneficial is that they can spend more leisure time with family and hobbies. Again, the lecturer believes that there are flaws in the writer's argument. He says that it not only increases employees' life quality but also reduces it. Companies prefer five days' work and they have more opportunities for promotions.
To sum up, both the author and speaker hold conflicting views about reducing the workday.
