My personal believe is that social connections have plenty of advantages. The most essential thing is that you can keep in touch with people, whom you do not have opportunity to communicate in real life. For example, when I moved to Moscow 5 years ago I felt terrible and lonely without my friends from my hometown. Fortunately, I could talk to them in social media, so it helped me to stay in positive mood. I understand Anyka's and Mariam's concern over face-to-face communication, but I believe they miss another critical point. What if people are over 500 km from each other? Social media become important for communication as the only way to talk or support each other.
So social connection is really important for mental health and for supporting friendship even in a long distance, which is why i believe that it has vary pluses.
