Some students prefer classes with frequent discussions between the professor and the students with almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with many lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
I prefer frequent discussions between the professor and the students. Some people argue that frequent discussions will make it impossible to complete the curriculum in limited amount of time citing the digressive nature of these conversations. However, I believe that these interactions offer far more advantages. I will explain my viewpoint by providing three reasons.
First, Interactive nature of these discussions, makes the process of learning a lot more efficient. Students will not dare to be inattentive in the classes due to the constant fear of the being questioned. As students are more attentive, they will understand the subject matter in a better fashion. By way of an example, My chemistry teacher in high school, used to constantly have discussions with us. He would question those students who would not pay attention. Thus, all of us, focused on whatever was being taught. We were able under chemistry in great detail and scored good grades. On the other hand, Our mathematics teacher would give us monologues. It was difficult for us to follow and learn the subject. Subsequently, our grades took a hit and the teacher was reprimanded. Therefore, discussions are necessary for improved academic performance of the students.
In addition to the interactive nature, constant conversations between the teacher and the students, will leave no room for miscommunication. For instance, the same chemistry teacher would let us ask doubts and questions pertaining to the subject, as and when they occurred in our minds. This was very important because if we did not understand a basic concept, it would have been impossible to learn a complex topic. In other words, the speech related to the advanced topics would have sounded like gibberish to us. This was yet another factor for our success in academics. Moreover, this will provide the teacher with a way to monitor the efficacy of his lectures, periodically. The teacher will be able to correct the understanding of students, if it has been misinterpreted and thus ensure that students can comprehend future topics.
Finally, this provides an opportunity for constructive feedback and criticism i.e if the teacher’s style of explanation is difficult to follow, then students can express their concerns and also provide with ways to improve the lecture. This is particularly important for the teacher because it will help refine his skills and help him get better at the job. This will also help the students as they do not have to put in a lot of efforts to understand what is being taught.
To conclude, I do concede that constant discussions might make it difficult for the teacher to complete the portions on time. In spite of that, I believe the encouraging effects outweigh the ills. Constant Interactions between the teacher and the students will provide an opportunity to make the process of learning more productive.
