Ways of teaching are always controversial, and I contend that no teaching style universally fits all. Some people may feel that being required to watch lecture videos before classes can be somewhat unnecessary. However, based on my experience, I prefer to familiarise the lecture in advance and make classes the discussion time. I am of this opinion for two reasons, which I will explore in the essay.
First of all, giving the class time to students improves the quality of the study and new directions to consider the subject. The time of the class is critically important as it is a high moment to put students together, creates a perfect atmosphere to communicate. Teachers will gain an opportunity to talk with students more efficiently as they already did the preview. What is more, some questions made by others are unique and refreshing to the content we are learning. I am the one who is benefited from this style of teaching. My religious history professor assigns us the lecture video she recorded before and answers some confusion we may have by watching videos alone when we sit in the classroom. It is a great opportunity for me to listen to other people’s opinions of a certain section in the lecture, and I learnt abundant new perspectives besides the textbooks and the knowledge that the professor did not cover in the video.
Furthermore, familiarising the lecture by video eases students’ pressure of study. Some people may argue that watching videos before the class adds additional obligations to students. However, based on what I experienced, this way made my study time easier than before. Professor can assign the topic of some assignments before the class, and students will be more flexible in deciding when to get started. Take an instance. I often prepare my section for the group work right after I finished the video watching and leave my class time for group discussions. Moreover, with assistant from the professor, the problems we encounter during the discussion can be resolved instantly without taking time to look up extra materials on our own. In contrast, my assignments would take me much more time if my professor did not develop this way of teaching.
In conclusion, I think that previewing the lecture and discussing it during classes will be more effective for college studies. This is because the quality of studies can be significantly improved if professors can take advantage of actual classes sufficiently, and this style of teaching would not add pressure to students but contradictorily reduce it.
