The reading and the lecture are both about whether the silver coin is real historical evidence or not. According to history, silver coins were discovered in the state of Maine in America brought by Norse. The author of the reading feels that the coin is fake by the lecturer opposes this idea. She thinks the coin is a real historical coin.

First the readings says that the place where the coin discovered is located very far from other sites where Norse went. Furthermore, Norse people were living in Canada which is thousand of kilometers away from Maine. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that even if they were living in the place that far from the site where the silver coin was discovered, their main work and their occupations were explorers. So they can travel although a destination is far from the place where they were living.

Secondly, the writer suggests that no other coin was found among the things that Norse discovered. In the article, it is said that they should have brought more silver coin if Maine was the place where has silver coin. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning, that yes, there was only one silver coin. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that they did not have permanent settlements, thus, they brought back all their valuable things including the coins. Furthermore they were interested in discovering objects and other objects were also found on the site.

Finally, the author posits that North America did not recognize the silver coin as money. They didn’t know if it was money so it is useless to bring. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that North American did not use the silver coin as money. He notes that the silver coin was appealing to North American as a beauty item. For example, they use it as a necklace, or jewelry.
