4 day workweek employees
The reading passage states that some companies in the United States give an option to their employees in which they can work four days in a week instead of five for 80 percent of their normal pay and this option has positive results not only for company and individuals but also for society. The professor in the lecture casts doubt on the points made in the reading.
First, considering the article, this choice increases companies profits based on which employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. And since the employees would be paid 80 percent of their normal rate, the company would not result in additional payments, as long as it would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees. In contrast, the professor in the lecture contracts the idea and further explains that this situation would force the companies to spend much more hiring new since employees for four day workweek require the same pay that five day employees need; not only because of training payments but also because of more computers or more spaces new employees need.
Second, the reading claims that using this option will have social benefits as it reduces the unemployment rates with providing new work positions. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture refutes the information presented in the reading and makes the point that this situation would increase the employers expectation with asking employees to work overtime, make them do that 5 day works in 4 days and as a result, not only there will be no additional job but also it makes the current job unpleasant.
Third, the author in the reading passage puts forward the idea that having this option can have advantages for individual employees too since it presents a more free time for them to be spent in their personal life. On the other hand, the speaker contracts the idea and adds that this would increase the risks for the employees and reduce the quality of life since it decreases their job stability and it may forbid them to advance their careers since employers prefer to choose five day workers for management positions to ensure the continuous coverage and consistent supervisor for entire work week so 4 day employees will be the first to lose their jobs.
