52-hertz whale
The reading passage and the lecture are about the 52-hertz whale, a whale that sings at an unusual frequency. The author of the article proposes several theories that explain how the high-pitched song originates. As reasonable as these points seem, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on them.
To begin with, the writer suggests that this whale might have been born in a combination with two different whale species, causing its sound to have hybrid of its parents. Conversely, disputing the reading's point, the lecturer claims that all-known hybrid whales will migrate with normal whales in the same pattern. Nevertheless, this 52-hertz whale has a unique pattern, in which it migrates alone. therefore, the lecturer rules out this theory.
Second, even though the author states that this whale probably has a damaged ability to hear which not only makes it unable to hear the normal sounds of other whales but causes it to sound differently since whales learn to sing by listening to other whales, the lecturer argues that it's a misconception. This is because he believes that whales make sounds depending on their throats. He attributes this unique sound to its special throat structure. Accordingly, the lecturer notes that the high-pitched sound has nothing to do with damaged ears.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the reading that this whale might be a rare species that most of them are now gone. He points out that if this whale is a rare species, it might have parents whose sounds can be detected before this one. Nonetheless, the equipment that is responsible for the sound monitoring didn't show any results. As a consequence, the lecturer has no confidence in this theory.
